Nickel 201 is a commercially pure wrought nickel alloy. It is the low-carbon version of Nickel 200. This material offers exceptional resistance to corrosion, particularly in alkaline environments. The composition of Nickel 201 Seamless Pipes is primarily nickel, usually at least 99.0%. Key trace elements include carbon (kept low at a maximum of 0.02%), manganese, silicon, and iron. This very low carbon content is important. It prevents sensitization at elevated temperatures, which means the alloy keeps its corrosion resistance even when heated.

The main difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 is the carbon content. Nickel 201 has a much lower carbon maximum (0.02% versus 0.15% for Nickel 200). This lower carbon level prevents a loss of corrosion resistance due to precipitation of carbon compounds when the material is used at temperatures between 600∘F and 1200∘F (315 ∘ C and 650 ∘ C). For service above 600 ∘ F, Nickel 201 is the preferred choice.

Nickel 201 Seamless Pipes are well-suited for many high-pressure applications. Seamless construction inherently offers better pressure integrity compared to welded pipes. The pipe’s ability to handle high pressure depends on factors like wall thickness, diameter, and operating temperature. 

There is generally about 3.5% to 5.5% nickel in 201 stainless steel. It’s important to note that 201 stainless steel is a distinct material, not to be confused with pure Nickel 201. Stainless steel 201 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy with higher manganese and nitrogen content to partly replace the more expensive nickel.

Nickel 201 Seamless Pipes possess excellent ductility and good tensile strength. The material is easily formed and welded. These properties, combined with its high melting point and resistance to thermal damage, make it highly valuable.

The primary difference between 201 and 202 stainless steel is its chemical composition, specifically the manganese and nickel levels. Both are austenitic stainless steels. However, Type 202 typically has a slightly higher nickel content than Type 201. This difference gives 202 slightly better corrosion resistance in some specific environments.
