Manufacturing Process of Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes

There are 5 steps involved in the alloy 20 seamless pipe manufacturing process which are given below. Every step of production is precisely controlled to comply with stringent industry standards.

Nickel Alloy Seamless Pipes Manufacturing Process

1. Raw Material Selection
High-quality nickel alloy billets and strips are carefully selected for superior strength and corrosion resistance.

2. Pipes Formation

The selected raw material is formed into pipes using seamless extrusion methods, depending on the application.

3. Heat Treatment

Pipes undergo required controlled heat treatment to enhance mechanical properties and relieve internal stresses.

4. Cold Working and Finishing

After heat treatment, pipes are cold-worked for better surface finish, dimensional accuracy and improved strength.

5. Quality Control and Testing

Every pipe is thoroughly inspected and tested to ensure it meets international quality standards for performance and reliability.

Application Of Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes

FAQ's

What industries commonly use Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes?

Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes are commonly used in industries that handle aggressive, hot corrosive chemicals. These sectors include the chemical processing industry for sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and phosphate service, petrochemicals, and food and pharmaceutical production. They are also essential in equipment used for acid pickling and synthetic rubber production.

Alloy 20 pipe is made of an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy. It also contains significant amounts of molybdenum and copper. This precise composition gives the material exceptional resistance to corrosive environments like hot sulfuric acid. The high nickel content is key to its outstanding performance.

Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes do not require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The low carbon content is specifically designed to resist the formation of harmful precipitates during welding. Skipping PWHT makes the fabrication process easy and more cost-effective while ensuring the pipe maintains its full corrosion resistance.

Alloy 20 is an industrial material grade also known as UNS N08020. It is classified as an austenitic stainless steel or nickel alloy. This grade is specifically made to offer high resistance to intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in aggressive acidic environments.

You should choose Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes when a standard stainless steel pipe (like Type 304 or 316) is insufficient. Alloy 20 offers significantly better resistance to hot sulfuric acid and localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice attack. Its higher nickel, copper, and molybdenum content provides a superior protection in severe applications.

Alloy 20 is welded using standard methods like Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or TIG) or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW or Stick). It is crucial to use matching filler metals (such as ERNiCrMo-3 or W86120) and proper heat input control. Cleanliness and the use of inert shielding gas are necessary to maintain weld integrity.

The minimum tensile strength of Nickel Alloy 20 Seamless Pipes is approximately 550 MPa (80,000 psi). This is considered a good mechanical strength level for an alloy optimized for corrosion resistance. The strength is sufficient for high-pressure industrial piping systems.

Alloy 20 cast material is the version of the alloy made through a casting process, typically designated as CN7M. This cast form maintains similar corrosion resistance properties but is shaped for components like pumps and valves. Its composition is slightly adjusted to improve castability while remaining metallurgically compatible with the wrought pipe material.
