Product Information of Super Duplex Stainless Steel Pipes

Super Duplex Stainless Steel Pipes are high-alloy stainless steel pipes with a dual-phase microstructure consisting of austenite and ferrite in roughly equal proportions.Known for their high strength, and pitting resistance, these pipes are ideal for use in aggressive environments such as high-impact wells, offshore platforms, and chemical processing units. Their duplex microstructure offers superior performance over standard stainless steel grades, especially in chloride-rich conditions.
These pipes are highly favoured due to their exceptional yield strength (typically around 550 MPa), tensile strength (up to 800 MPa), elongation of 25% minimum, and impressive hardness (max 32 HRC). They also offer excellent weldability and a high surface finish, making them suitable for both structural and fluid transport applications. Available in a wide range of industry standard sizes with outer diameters ranging from ½” to 24”, wall thicknesses from Sch10 to Sch160, and lengths up to 12 meters or as per custom requirement.

Super Duplex Steel Pipes Manufacturing Process

The process of manufacturing super duplex steel pipe is divided into five stages which is outlined below.
Super Duplex Steel Seamless Pipes Manufacturing Process

1. Raw Material Selection

High-quality super duplex steel billets and strips are carefully selected for superior strength and corrosion resistance.

2. Pipes Formation
The selected raw material is formed into pipes using seamless extrusion methods, depending on the application.

3. Heat Treatment
Pipes undergo required controlled heat treatment to enhance mechanical properties and relieve internal stresses.

4. Cold Working & Finishing
After heat treatment, pipes are cold-worked for better surface finish, dimensional accuracy and improved strength.

5. Quality Control and Testing
Every pipe is thoroughly inspected and tested to ensure it meets international quality standards for performance and reliability.

FAQ Of Super Duplex Stainless Steel Pipes

What is super duplex pipe?

A super duplex pipe is a tube made from a type of stainless steel with a “duplex” microstructure, containing an equal mix of austenite and ferrite phases. This balanced, two-phase structure gives the material a unique combination of properties. Super duplex grades are enhanced with higher levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen compared to standard duplex steels.

The composition of super duplex steel is what sets it apart. While specific grades like S32750 and S32760 have minor variations, a typical composition includes approximately 24-26% chromium, 6-8% nickel, and 3-5% molybdenum. A key element is nitrogen, typically present at 0.24-0.32%, which significantly enhances its strength and resistance to pitting corrosion. The remainder of the composition is primarily iron. This careful balance of elements is crucial for maintaining the dual-phase structure.

The primary difference lies in the alloying content and performance. Super duplex steel has a higher concentration of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen than standard duplex steel. This enriched chemical composition gives super duplex a higher Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), a measure of its resistance to localized pitting corrosion. Super duplex offers superior strength and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for more demanding applications.

Yes, super duplex steel is magnetic. Its magnetism comes from the ferrite phase in its microstructure. While austenitic stainless steels (like 304 or 316) are generally non-magnetic, the significant ferrite content in the duplex structure gives the material its magnetic properties. This can be a useful characteristic for sorting materials in recycling facilities.

Due to its exceptional strength and corrosion resistance, super duplex steel pipes are widely used in harsh environments. Key industries include oil and gas exploration and production (especially for subsea systems), chemical and petrochemical processing, seawater desalination plants, and marine applications. They are also utilized in pulp and paper production and for components in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems.

Super duplex steel pipes are generally not recommended for continuous use at temperatures above 300°C (572°F). While they possess excellent properties at lower temperatures, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to the formation of brittle intermetallic phases. This can significantly reduce the material’s toughness and impact strength, making it unsuitable for high-temperature steam line applications.

The maximum allowable pressure for a super duplex steel pipe is not a single value; it depends on several factors, including the pipe’s diameter, wall thickness, and the operating temperature. The high mechanical strength of super duplex steel allows it to withstand very high pressures. The exact pressure rating for a specific pipe must be calculated according to relevant design codes and standards, such as ASME B31.3 for process piping.

Yes, it is common practice for manufacturers and suppliers to provide super duplex steel pipes in custom lengths to meet specific project requirements. While standard lengths are readily available, pipes can be cut to precise measurements to minimize waste and facilitate easier installation on site. This customization is a standard service offered within the specialty metals industry.
